Sample Gas Cooler Worth Knowing

Interesting facts about sample gas coolers

IN EXTRACTIVE GAS ANALYSIS, the conditioning of the sample gas is the most important prerequisite for reliable and reproducible measurement results. Moisture is removed in gas coolers. Our programme offers a wide selection for this purpose. Depending on the power requirement, the gas coolers are based on a semiconductor (Peltier) or compressor cooling system. What they all have in common are exchangeable heat exchangers, the material of which can be selected according to the application.

Washout-optimised sample gas coolers

Especially in emission control, the composition of the exhaust gas flows can vary. Special heat exchangers reduce the separation of gas components with an affinity to moisture during condensate formation. Thus, the sample gas remains more stable and the measurement results become more accurate.

Peltier versus compressor cooling system

The efficiency of sample gas cooling is determined by several parameters. One of them is the temperature of the cooling medium, ambient air, another is the energy content of the sample gas flow. If both values are rather low, (Peltier) semiconductors are sufficient for heat transfer. Compressor systems are more efficient.

Condensate drainage

Depending on whether the sample gas conditioning system is designed for suction or pressure operation, the condensate drainage must be designed. Float traps are suitable for pressure operation, peristaltic pumps for suction operation.

Pre-cooling

In applications with a high moisture content in the sample gas, a combination of a pre-cooler and a smaller after-cooler can be the economically more efficient solution.

Acid dosing

Continuous dosing of phosphoric acid can significantly reduce the leaching (or separation) of highly water-soluble gas components, such as SO2. This makes the measurement results more accurate and meets the requirements of decreasing detection limits.

Heat exchanger

All sample gas coolers in our programme have plug-in heat exchangers whose basic material must be determined according to the application. You can therefore choose between stainless steel, glass and plastic. The internal construction of the heat exchanger depends on the sample gas properties and the desired measurement result.
