FAQ: Oil/air coolers
- Is air suitable as a cooling medium?
Yes, but compromises must be made when calculating the optimum size of an oil cooler. The temperature of the available ambient air depends on local and weather-related conditions and can vary significantly. These fluctuations are much greater than those of water as a cooling medium, which means that a larger performance reserve must be considered in the cooler design.
- What is another important design criterion?
In addition to fluctuating air temperatures, varying oil flow rates often make it more difficult to determine the optimum cooler size. For this reason, we generally recommend the BLK and ELK series. These units are coupled with a circulation pump and operate with a constant oil flow rate. They also provide an excellent basis for additional system integration and customized solutions.
- Are there preferred installation locations for oil/air coolers?
Yes. Two key factors should be considered: dust/particle contamination and solar radiation. Indoors, a sufficient distance from traffic routes and dust sources should be maintained. Outdoors, installation on the north side of a building or under a protective canopy is advantageous. In some cases, the cooler and the hydraulic unit should be installed separately.
