FAQ: Temperature Monitoring

  • Why is temperature monitoring important in oil systems?

    Oil viscosity changes depending on temperature. However, as a critical functional element, the oil must operate within a specific viscosity range to ensure required properties and perform its intended functions. This requires the operating temperature to be maintained within a defined range. Continuous monitoring of the oil temperature is therefore essential.

  • Where should the current operating temperature of the oil be measured?

    The oil reservoir is generally considered the standard measurement point. In most hydraulic systems, the oil circulation loop begins and ends there. With proper flow conditions and sufficient mixing, the reservoir provides an adequately accurate average temperature value. In lubrication systems, additional measurement points within the system may also need to be considered.

  • Why is temperature monitoring important beyond its effect on viscosity?

    Changes in operating temperature within an oil circuit are directly caused by the applied workload and the accumulation of friction losses. The temperature continues to rise until thermal equilibrium with the surrounding air is reached or until the oil overheats and becomes damaged. This demonstrates that an unstable oil temperature has a direct impact on the service life of the oil and the overall system.

  • Should the temperature trend be monitored continuously?

    This is strongly recommended. Recording a temperature log provides valuable information about temporary deviations or developing trends that may affect system condition, reduce service life, and potentially lead to operational disturbances.

  • Are measuring devices with local displays available?

    Yes. The product range includes devices with displays directly on the sensor as well as remote display units designed for DIN rail mounting.
