Customer Information: Compressor Sample Gas Coolers Series
As part of the implementation of Regulation (EU) 2024/573, we would like to inform you about an important change concerning our compressor sample gas coolers (EGK and RC series). Starting from January 1, 2025, the use of fluorinated refrigerants will be heavily restricted within the European Union, which is why we are adapting our products accordingly. Triggered by the so-called “phase-down” of HFC refrigerants (hydrofluorocarbons) — which will be further tightened and effectively become a “phase-out” with the entry into force of the new EU regulation — a global shortage of refrigerant R134a is to be expected.
What is changing?
The previously used refrigerant R134a (1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane) falls under this regulation and its use is restricted. Bühler Technologies has therefore decided to use a natural refrigerant in the future.
Technical adjustments: In order to use the new refrigerant, adjustments were made to the refrigeration circuit. These ensure that the cooling performance remains the same or even improves slightly. In addition, changes to the electronics and design have been implemented to further optimize handling and efficiency. The standard series of EGK sample gas coolers will be converted to the new generation of RC sample gas coolers, with an extended range of options.
New item numbers: In order to make the changeover as easy as possible for you, the item numbers have been revised and a clear differentiation in the article number structure has been created.
The new refrigerant offers the following advantages:
Low Global Warming Potential (GWP): With a GWP value of 3, the new refrigerant meets the requirements of the new regulation, which requires a GWP value of less than 150.
More environmentally friendly: Reduces CO₂ emissions and actively contributes to climate protection.
Future-proof: By switching to a natural refrigerant, we ensure that the customer's systems meet future refrigerant requirements and can continue to operate without restrictions.
2025 changeover timeline
The new compressor sample gas cooler series "RC" with natural refrigerant can be ordered from 01.06 – with the exception of the R2.4 Rack (available for order Q3/2025). The old compressor sample gas coolers series "EGK" with refrigerant R134a will remain available until 31.12.2026 or the stock is used up. The conversion of the Ex coolers EGK 2A Ex and EGK 1 Ex 2 is still going to take place and we will inform you about this in good time. Existing devices of the EGK and RC series that are already installed in systems can continue to be operated.
